University of Münster
Seminar für Alte Geschichte
1 Profile
With its focus on Greco-Roman history, the Department of Ancient History offers a programme of study which enables students to receive an exceptionally broad historical education. Practical insight into research activities can be gained through the two affiliated research centres “Asia Minor” and “Historische Landeskunde des Antiken Griechenland” (Historical studies in ancient Greek culture) and through the cooperation with the German Archaeological Institutes in Athens and Istanbul, and the research centre “Inscriptiones Graecae” at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin-Brandenburg. Additionally, the department also participates in the “Zentrum für Geschichte und Kultur des östlichen Mittelmeerraumes” (Centre for Mediterranean History and Culture).
In Münster the Classical Archaeology and Christian Archaeology are closely linked in research and teaching. Focal points include image studies, archaeological fieldwork and religious studies. The research centre "Ancient Numismatics" also belongs to the teaching unit. The Archaeological Museum of the University of Münster not only offers direct visual and study material for courses, but also enables training in museum practice (inventory, interpretation, exhibition, restoration, didactics) in special courses.
The Classical Philology conveys, on the one hand, the complete indexing of Greek and Latin texts with regard to their literary-historical and stylistic-aesthetic qualities, and on the other hand, the contextualization of the culture of the Greek and Roman world. In Greek Philology there is a special focus on historiography, iambik and Platonism research, in Latin Studies on the field of ancient epic, Roman satire and its Middle Latin reception, Roman tragedy, ancient epigrams as well as Latin poetry of late antiquity and the Renaissance.
