Department of Classical Philology

Profile of Classical Studies in Ljubljana

The Department of Classical Philology is one of the founding departments at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. It focuses on the languages, culture, and history of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome, offering one of the most diverse and interdisciplinary educational experiences within the modern humanities while fostering interdisciplinary connections to the departments of history and archaeology at the same faculty. In addition to a thorough linguistic education in Greek and Latin, it focuses on the field of ancient political and cultural history, literature, philosophy, religion, and mythology, as well as daily life, lexicography, reception, and translation. This helps the students develop scholarly consistency, analytical skills, the ability to handle complex information, and the intellectual breadth required for twenty-first-century occupations.
